.2014 - A Voice at the Table, a 35-minute documentary, began as a casual text conversation in June 2013. It gradually gained momentum over several months, almost a whispered voice at the table; or more to the point, a voice long missing from the suicide education and prevention table –
the voice of the suicide attempt survivor. Where does that voice belong? A Voice at the Table brings that question into the light.
A Voice at the Table received Honorary Mention as a documentary at the 2015 SAMHSA Voice Awards
2016 - Voices Still Unheard -A young person finds the courage to seek help with excessive sadness, depression, self-injury, suicidal thinking – a suicide attempt. Are the resources and services there to guide them to wellness? Is calling crisis response the only option? What about support for the family and friends who often feel helpless and overwhelmed with fear? This is a conversation we must begin and not end until we have better options.
Voices Still Unheard spotlights the voices of two natural offshoots from A Voice at the Table. Where is the voice of our youth? What do those in their twenties, whether in college, the workforce – or neither – what do they have to say about what worked for them, what didn’t, and what would have been helpful as they traveled the difficult path of teen depression, self-injury, suicidal thinking and suicide attempts? The second voice is that of their friends and family as they struggled from the distance or alongside their loved one.
2017 - Voices from the Shadows -is the 3rd suicide prevention documentary in the “Voices” series produced by Annemarie Matulis.
Fear can be paralyzing. Parents, family members and friends of suicide attempt survivors live with this fear, but they remain in the shadows, silent and isolated. The parents, family members and friends of suicide attempt survivors are almost invisible. There is no national campaign for those who remain in the shadows. Voices From the Shadows spotlights that Grand Canyon gap. There is no research yet available to begin to identify how many people have been impacted. This documentary shares the very personal stories of five families as they share the journey to freedom from fear which is peppered with sadness and tears, laughter and love, chaos and serenity, frustration and reflection, insight and inventory and, eventually, can bring resilience, comfort, and a quiet place within. But it has been a lonely battle for those struggling to help a loved one who has attempted or continues to attempt to die by suicide. This film is in a revision stage.
A Voice at the Table and Voices Still Unheard are available to the public on Vimeo. Both films are appropriate for and have been used in workshops, forums, community events and in college classrooms. They each have a facilitator's guide and if you do plan to use them, it would be helpful to know when & where so we can add that to the calendar. It would also be helpful to received feedback or evaluation forms.
Voices from the Shadows is a full length (52 minutes) documentary. A portion of the film was screened at the April 2017 Massachusetts Conference for Suicide Prevention. The full feature version was screened on November 1st, 2017 at The Forum: Life's New Normal. As with the first two films, the goal is to incorporate "Shadows" into educational workshops with a facilitator's guide. The film was developed as a companion to the self-care workbook for the family/friends impacted by a loved one's suicidal crisis, Is This the Night: Finding Inner Peace, and will be presented during the full day retreat workshops.
Face-to-face workshops are available on request. They can be 1/2 day, full day retreat-style sessions or two day, in depth study sessions. Online webinars and trainings will be available throughout 2019.
Face-to-face workshops series (5 to 7 months) are currently running in Massachusetts and Missouri. Preparations are in progress to launch in Michigan and Maryland.
